The right to education, are we true to the letter and spirit of the constitution ?

“You protect people from abuse not because they are black, not because they are white and not because they are in the minority but because they are human beings....” OR Tambo. 

This quote reminds me of the daily abuse and neglect that children with disabilities face as a result of having an education system that fails to recognize their humanity.

Instances of this failure are apparent in many situations.

One such instance is the fact that the constitution of Zimbabwe specifically recognizes Sign Language as one of the country’s 16 official languages and yet to date a Sign Language syllabus has not been developed.

While the Ministry of Education has gone out of its way to develop syllabi for all other indigenous languages, the same has not been done for Sign Language.

This creates serious notions that Deaf children are not considered as human beings deserving equal treatment and a  language. 

The lack of a Sign Language syllabus and examinations for the language have denied children with disabilities the right to higher education as a  language is required.

Deaf children are human beings and need to be  protected from abuse by state.
