DEAF EDUCATION DIALOGUE REPORT
On the 14th of May 2015, Deaf Zimbabwe Trust hosted its first Deaf Education Dialogue Meeting. The Deaf Education Dialogue is an initiative by Deaf Zimbabwe Trust to begin dialogue and debate on the educational problems faced by Deaf students in Zimbabwe. Deaf education has been problematic in Zimbabwe.
The maiden event was aimed at discussing the role of Sign Language in Deaf Education. The speakers at the dialogue were veteran disability activist and education expert Dr Tsitsi Chataika, Blessing Makirimira who is a Deaf adult and Barbra Nyangairi the Executive Director of Deaf Zimbabwe Trust. Stakeholders present at the dialogue came from various ministries and departments including Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC), Ministry of Primary and Secondary education’s School Psychological Services Department, Deaf Women Included, Zimbabwe Deaf Media Trust, Leonard Cheshire Disability Zimbabwe, University of Zimbabwe Department of Education Foundations as well as the Deaf Community.
The Deaf Education Dialogue successfully created a platform for stakeholders to interrogate the role of Sign Language in Deaf education. Input from participants indicated that there was consensus over the fact that poor education outcomes of Deaf students are largely a result of lack of Sign Language proficiency of teachers teaching Deaf students.
